Human-Centered Design & Agile Training

Bringing HCD & Agile processes to public safety.

Technical Safety BC (TSBC) is a Crown company, responsible for establishing and enforcing public safety regulations for the Canadian province of British Columbia. TSBC needed support solving the COVID-19 pandemic-era challenge of how to remotely conduct building inspections, and enlisted Ben’s employer TheoremOne to guide them in developing a prototype application.

After observing the processes employed by Ben and his colleagues, TSBC leadership became interested in learning how to apply human-centered design (HCD) and Agile methodologies across internal initiatives to build empathy and inspire collaboration. There were multiple projects across TSBC where this kind of thinking was needed, and the biggest challenges across TSBC were all tied to process inefficiency. Something needed to change.

So what happened?

TSBC leadership requested a series of HCD and Agile workshops to train employees to put people at the center of the work they do, and develop a flexible organizational approach to process design. Ben collaborated with a colleague to devise and lead a 2-day, fully remote experiential training workshop for 30 TSBC employees.

The workshop generated additional interest across TSBC, leading to three additional workshops to reach nearly 100 employees across the organization. The saturation of HCD and Agile knowledge has inspired TSBC to begin transforming their processes from the inside by listening to their client customers, and turning them into allies in the pursuit of public safety in British Columbia.
