BAM Mobile Sales Tool

Digital asset management for industrial sales.

Industrial heavy equipment is difficult to sell. There can be thousands of feature combinations, pages of specifications, and individual units sold are expensive. It can be challenging for a sales person to hold that information in their head, and make the best recommendations for their customers.

Daimler North America is the manufacturer of Freightliner trucks. In 2012, they approached the Portland agency Pop Art to design and build a mobile sales tool (MST) for salespeople to use, and a digital asset management (DAM) system to manage and centralize all product data and design assets for Freightliner. The combined platform is known as the Freightliner Sales Tool (FST). In 2013, Pop Art subcontracted Ben’s agency Clearform to design key graphical aspects of the FST.

Based on the success of FST, the CEO of Pop Art began to pivot the agency from selling services to selling digital product—a customizable and extensible version of FST—called BAM.

So what happened?

After Clearform ceased operations in 2017, Ben was hired at Pop Art as the director of design to establish a new digital product design capability at the company. BAM had been in development for six months, and part of his new role was to envision the future of BAM, and bring it into reality.

BAM consists of a web-based DAM tool used by heavy equipment manufacturers, and is capable of publishing specs and marketing assets to a MST used by heavy equipment dealers and distributors.

Ben designed the initial user experience, interface, and design system for the DAM and MST, and was responsible for the creative direction of the marketing materials. He grew his team of designers to extend the brand and the user experience design of the platform, led product strategy, prioritized features based on customer feedback, streamlined processes, and championed user-centered design in collaboration with the product engineering team.
